Anacostia is one of Washington D.C.'s oldest communities, with a rich African American history stretching back to the 19th century. Home to Frederick Douglass's historic estate, it has long been a place of culture, faith, and civic life.

The neighborhood's landmarks — the vintage Anacostia storefront signs and the iconic Big Chair — are symbols of a community proud of where it comes from and hopeful about where it's going.

SJCDC's work is anchored along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE and the surrounding blocks — the commercial and civic spine of Anacostia.
